Phil is a Venture Partner at U.S. Venture Partners, which he joined in 1985. Based on his background as President and CEO of Macy's California for 11 years, he has focused his investments in the retail sector—from pure retailing plays to the consumer Internet. For example, he guided USVP's investments in PetsMart and Fresh Choice.

Prior to joining U.S. Venture Partners, Phil had a successful 28 year career as an operating executive with R.H. Macy, Inc. He served as President and CEO of Macy's California from 1974 to 1985 during which time it became the dominant department store in California. Phil served on the R.H. Macy Inc. Board of Directors from 1977 to 1985. He also served on the Board of Directors of Apple Computer, Inc. for eight years from 1979 to 1987.

Phil is currently a director of one publicly traded company, Gottschalk’s. He also serves on the Board of Directors for several private companies, including SoundID, AuctionDrop, Catalyst Homes, Tea Living and Specialty’s Café and Bakery.

Phil is the Industry Consulting Partner for Consumer/Retail Technology and serves on the management team of The Halo Fund III Management Company. For the last 8 years, he has also been a member of The Angels’ Forum.

Phil is a guest lecturer in graduate classrooms at Stanford and Santa Clara University. He has two children, four grandchildren, and a 300-year old elder he looks up to: Emily, a magnificent oak in the center of his Napa Valley property. He has a vineyard where he grows mostly Cabernets. Phil is on the boards of the California College of Art, the San Francisco Botanical Gardens and the diRosa Preserve, a project in the Napa Valley that is seeking to create a public museum to show Rene diRosa's private collection of California artists.

Phil holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
