The career of Richard J. Elkus, Jr., has been intimately connected with the development and evolution of Silicon Valley. Mr. Elkus spent his first ten years at Ampex Corporation, serving variously as Production Control Manager, General Manager of the Educational and Industrial Products Division, Assistant to the President, and member of the Operations Board. He wrote the original product plan and headed the team that introduced the VCR to the world in September, 1970.

In summary, his business experience includes:
  • Director, KLA-Tencor (1997 to present) – Vice Chairman and Chairman Audit Committee; Member, Nominating and Governance Committees. KLA-Tencor is the world's largest supplier of metrology and defect inspection equipment and yield management systems to the semiconductor industry.
  • Vice Chairman and Director, Tencor Instruments (1994 to 1997).
  • Director, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Prometrix Corporation (1983 to 1994). Prometrix merged with Tencor in 1994, at which time Prometrix was at a $50 million/year run rate and was the most profitable metrology company in its field in the world.
  • Director, Lam Research (1997 to present) – Member, Audit, Nominating and Governance Committees. Lam Research is one of the six largest manufacturers of production equipment for the semiconductor industry.
  • Director, OnTrak Systems, Inc. (1996-1997). In August, 1997, OnTrak merged with Lam Research.
  • Director, SOPRA, SA (1998 to present). SOPRA is a leading French company supplying metrology equipment to the semiconductor and medical industries.
  • Director, Virage Logic (2000 to present) – Chairman of the Audit Committee, Member of Nominating and Governance Committees. Virage Logic is a leading supplier of intellectual property architecture for the semiconductor industry.
  • Director and Chairman (1985-1992) of Integrated Systems, Inc. Integrated Systems was a leading producer of real-time CAE and CASE operating systems, now merged with Wind River.
  • Executive Vice President and General Manager of Geometrics, Inc. (1974-80). Geometrics became the world's largest independent manufacturer of magnetometers and spectrometers specifically for the geophysical survey and analysis markets.
  • Director of Acacia Sales Corporation (1973-83). Acacia Sales became one of the fastest growing independent electronic distributors in the United States during the period 1973 to 1983.
  • Director and Chairmanof the Board of Pacific Measurements, Inc. (1974-83). Pacific Measurements, a manufacturer of microwave test instrument systems, was merged with Wavetek Corporation in 1983.
  • Director and a Founder of Tomex Corporation (1982-87). Tomex developed a unique software system for the analysis of geophysical information resulting from drilling operations and is now a part of Western Geophysical Corporation.

  • Chairman of the National Medal of Technology Nomination Evaluation Committee, which recommends to the Secretary of Commerce and the President of the United States those individuals who should be honored by the National Medal of Technology, the United States' preeminent medal presented by the President to individuals and companies to honor their contribution to the technological development of the nation.
  • Director of the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation.
  • Member of the University of California President’s Board on Science and Innovation.
  • Member of the Board of Trustees of The Scripps Research Institute.
  • Member of the Industry Advisory Council (IAC), The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, UCLA.
  • Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a world-renowned think tank for organizing high-level policy recommendations to Congress and the Presidency.
  • Member of the Board of Trustees of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
  • Member of the Advisory Board of the Economic Strategy Institute, a Washington think tank devoted to enhancing U.S. competitiveness and acting as an advisor to current and previous administrations.
  • Member and mentor to Stanford University's Future Professors Program whose purpose was to graduate professors who have combined technological backgrounds in engineering and manufacturing.

Mr. Elkus received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his MBA in from Dartmouth College, Tuck School of Business Administration.
